ON THE JOB:

December 17th crews responded to a reported car-fire at Dawn Drive and Highway 3.  Medic 51 and Engine 51 actually found the flaming vehicle about two miles closer to Allyn then first thought and quickly deployed a handline to extinguish the fire.  A family of four traveling in the vehicle was displaced and had no transportation available.  The occupants were placed in medic 51 while State troopers and fire personnel made arrangements for transportation and care.  Highway 3 was blocked for about one hour.

December 20th at around noon crews were dispatched to a multiple car accident near Bayshore and the Johns Prairie Hill.  The initial callers reported several injuries and young children were involved.  Units arrived to find two cars blocking the northbound lanes with several patients.  One car was on the bridge and hard against the guardrail and the driver was out with minor injuries.  The second car had a young child and mother in it.  The mother was injured though not seriously and calls were made on behalf of the mother to get grandma and grandpa to the scene to take care of the child.  Aid 56 crewmembers stood by until the responsible parties arrived.  Highway was block for about and hour.

Again on December 20th Medic 51 responded into Pierce County Fire District 16 on a serious injury accident for mutual aid.  Medic 51 arrived on the scene in Pierce County and ended up transporting one patient to St. Joseph's Hospital, Tacoma.

December 31st highway 3 was covered in ice and some snow when a vehicle traveling northbound just south of the Mason Benson Road left the road ending up on it's side.  The driver suffered only minor injuries.  Shortly after that accident a car going south stopped to assist when a following car served hitting the stopped vehicle and then another one traveling northbound.  The vehicle then left the scene at a high rate of speed.  Fire Department units arrived to find vehicles on both sides of the road, numerous people walking around, holiday traffic trying to get through the mess, and no one really seriously injured yet.  District 5 units established traffic control when a bystander offered up the license number and description of the fleeing vehicle.  Mason County deputies monitoring the incident radio traffic found the vehicle and detained the driver.  There were no injuries.  FD units where on scene several hours while vehicles were towed from the scene providing traffic control.

TRAINING

Practice burn is scheduled for January 31st in the Allyn area.  The house is large, over 3000 sq. feet and three stories tall.  The building is being used by fire district, Mason County Sheriff, and Washington Correction Center personnel, for training until the burn is completed.  The homeowner has been very cooperative in letting us use the building for almost a month before conducting the training burn.

OTEP this month is Modular 1 Mechanism of Injury and it includes extrication.  PM/FF Rob Williams is the lead instructor for all modules.

Mason County Fire Chiefs Association is underway.  Classes started Saturday January 10th at WCC.  24 students from around the county are enrolled.  Mason 5 has seven new firefighters enrolled.

MAINTENANCE

Air 53 is out of service is still out of service.  M-5 expects to fire up the new engine tomorrow if all goes well.  Both Medic units have been in for service recently.  No major breakdowns or incidents involving to Mason 5 equipment over the last month and especially during the snow and ice.
