FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT 5 MASON COUNTY

 

Chairperson Griffey called the meeting of March 24, 2004 to order at 10:00 A.M. Commissioner Hauser and Taylor and Chief Knight were present.

 

The minutes of the meeting of March 10, 2004 were read.  MOTION MADE BY TAYLOR AND SECONDED BY HAUSER TO APPROVE AS READ.  MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.

 

Correspondence:  A memo regarding EMT/FF Eric Moore and his life saving efforts while Eric was on vacation in Arizona. The Board thanked Eric for his good deed.

 

General Information: Assistant Chiefs prepared reports of Statistics and District 5 Responses.  A brief discussion followed.

 

Chief Knight handed out copies of a report on Volunteer and Career Firefighter statistics nationwide and a brief discussion followed.

 

There was a general discussion about the Highway 3 20-acre parcel of land that the board has considered selling.  Chief Knight showed maps that show the topography of the land.  Chief Knight recommended selling the 20-acre parcel instead of selling one half of the 20-acre parcel.  He will have this on the agenda at a future meeting.

 

Business for Consideration: Resolution No. 272 was presented for discussion and adoption.  MOTION MADE BY TAYLOR AND SECONDED BY HAUSER TO ADOPT RESOLUTION NO. 272 TO OFFER PARTICIPATION IN THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF RETIREMENT DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN.  MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.

 

Chief Knight mentioned the Recruit Class is coming along well.  On Saturday March 27 the Recruits will be training at Station 57 for the SCBA maze.  The board members are invited to this and other classes.  Assistant Chief Snyder mentioned that the Recruit graduation would be at the Shelton Civic Center on Tuesday June 22, 2004 at 7:00 P.M.  All are invited.

 

Assistant Chief Mike Snyder prepared a report on the tax levy rate for fire districts in the County.  Mason 5 is fifth in the standing.  The levy rate ranges from $0.89 cents per thousand up to $2.216 per thousand.  Chief Knight said he would be researching the benefit charge laws for ideas for future funding.  A discussion followed.

 

The regular meeting was temporarily suspended at 10:20 A.M. to call a Board for Volunteer Firefighters to order.  The meeting adjourned at 10:22 A.M. and the regular meeting reconvened.

 

The vouchers were reviewed. MOTION MADE BY HAUSER AND SECONDED BY TAYLOR TO APPROVE FOR PAYMENT VOUCHERS #19988 THROUGH AND INCLUDING #19990 TOTALING $167,359.79 FOR MARCH PAY.  MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. MOTION MADE BY HAUSER AND SECONDED BY TAYLOR TO APPROVE FOR PAYMENT VOUCHERS #19991 THROUGH AND INCLUDING #20011 TOTALING $8,887.31.  MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.

 

Public Suggestions and Comments: Mr. Brokaw asked about Proposed Policy #2733, has any thing been discussed or finalized?  Chairperson Griffey said we are still working on it, nothing has been finalized.

 

All were reminded that the Department Banquet is this Saturday March 27 at Lake Limerick at 5 P.M.

 

The regular meeting was temporarily suspended at 10:40 A.M. to call for an Executive Session to discuss IAFF negotiations.  The meeting adjourned at 10:50 A.M. with no action taken, the regular meeting reconvened and adjourned.
